We can assist you by providing a Competent Person to complete your fire risk assessment which you are required to have done by law. This has been the case since 2006.

About Smart Health & Safety

If you are responsible for premises then you are required to have a Fire Risk Assessment by law. This has been the case since 2006, yet still we encounter clients who are not aware of their responsibilities.

The legislation (Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005) was designed with supplementary guidance documents which in theory allowed the ‘Responsible Person’ to complete their own fire risk assessment. However, the reality is that for anything more than the simplest premises the assistance of a ‘Competent Person’ will be required.

We can assist you by providing a Competent Person to complete your fire risk assessment. A Competent Person is defined in law as somebody with a blend of training, skills, knowledge and experience. Our team also have previous invaluable experience as Fire Safety Enforcement Officers to call upon…or if you prefer, poacher turned gamekeeper to your advantage!

Read more about how we work…

There are three important aspects to how we complete a fire risk assessment for our clients.

  1. We don’t want you spending more than is necessary and seek cost-effective solutions.
  2. To our knowledge, we are the most competitive provider of this comprehensive service.
  3. Our process itself, which is outlined below:
  • We use a digital inspection application. We collect the data from your premises, subject it to a QA process, and issue your fire risk assessment which identifies vulnerabilities and advises on how to resolve them.
  • Photographic references are included throughout the report to maximise the clarity of the action required.
  • As well as a PDF copy of your fire risk assessment, we have the facility to allocate electronic ‘actions’ to nominated persons within your organisation. This increases the level of ownership for each action and, once completed, automatically updates our database. When all actions are completed we will issue an updated fire risk assessment to you for no extra charge.
  • Our digitised process is based on bespoke templates we have created to meet the industry standard for Fire Risk Assessment. We have streamlined the process using our app-based approach to allow fast turnaround. This is important in maintaining the currency of the information and your subsequent compliance. If required, we can discuss same and next day turnaround for the process.

The Key to Effective Fire Risk Assessments: Competency

The Key to Effective Fire Risk Assessments: Competency

When it comes to fire risk assessments, competency is absolutely crucial. It’s not just about ticking boxes or going through the motions; it’s about having the knowledge, skills, and experience to accurately identify potential fire hazards and implement effective preventive measures.

Our services

We are probably the most competitive fire risk assessors in your area as it stands, but the added value of a real-time management system really sets us apart from our competitors.

Fire Risk Assessments

As well as a fire risk assessment report in traditional PDF format, all of our clients receive a link to a live online format.

We allocate actions from our assessments by email to stakeholders e.g. maintenance, office managers, facilities managers etc. As each digital action is updated, the assessment refreshes automatically, meaning that you always have access to the most current copy of your assessment.

You can have any number of stakeholders, which allows proper ownership of the fire safety management issues.

Fire Awareness and Fire Marshall Training

Fire awareness training is a requirement irrespective of the type of workplace. Every member of your staff should receive a level training commensurate with the activity in their role.

For larger or more complex environments, a designated fire warden is an important part of fire safety prevention and response. The fire warden is usually an additional responsibility undertaken by a staff member to ensure that effective fire safety measures and evacuation procedures are maintained.

Health & Safety Audits and Risk Assessments

Under UK law, all organisations with five or more staff are required to maintain a written Health and Safety Policy. This will cover arrangements such as your risk assessments covering significant hazards in your workplaceHealth & Safety Executive guidance details a five step approach to conducting these analyses covering: identifying hazards; deciding who might be harmed and how; evaluating the risks and deciding on control measures; recording and implementing key findings; and reviewing and updating your assessment.

How we help…

A multi-national retail client introduced a potentially flammable product range into their flagship stores.

They requested our advice in advance to ensure suitable control measures would be implemented in advance. Smart Health and Safety were able to provide suitable guidance on the storage and handling of the product to meet regulatory requirements and reflect a significant change in existing fire risk assessments.

Case Study: A retail story

A leading High Street currency exchange company based in London and the Home Counties placed a tender to secure Fire Risk Assessment services across its 100 plus outlets. Smart Health and Safety procured this work by demonstrating that they had a product that would stand up to Regulatory scrutiny and allow for cash flow forecasting via its risk management software.

The project requirements were such that all of the organisations retail units and concessions had to be assessed within a one month deadline with risk reporting in real time.

Smart Health and Safety completed the project within the parameters of the tender by allocating three dedicated assessors to the project under the control of a Project Manager who also acted as the quality assurance lead which ensured consistency of reporting.

The main challenges for the project were:

  • Diverse spread of retail outlets across London and the South East.
  • Short project timeline
  • Interaction with other retailers who had shared control of common parts.
  • Implementation of the risk output into the organisational management system.
  • Balancing in-house security measures that are inherent to a cash environment against means of escape.

Upon completion of the project, Smart Health and Safety provided the organisation with a dashboard that had live feeds into the all of the significant findings of the fire risk assessments. This allowed them to sign off work as being completed which dynamically reduced their risk rating.

How we help…

Smart’s client, a multi-national steel producer, asked for assistance in creating a fire safety management system for a large site with different usage areas.

Our assessors completed a full survey, before creating individual reports for each area. The reports identified and prioritised actions, and were presented within our digital fire safety management system to allow the client to sign off the actions as they were completed

FAQs

1. What is a fire risk assessment?
A fire risk assessment is a process involving the evaluation of the likelihood that there will be a fire and the consequences if one were to occur.
2. Why have fire safety training?
Knowing how to act in the event of a fire or emergency is an important skill for employees to have. The actions of any one person are likely to impact others around them. Fire safety training is about making sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. Fire safety training should cover everything from preventing fires and implementing best practice, to how to stay safe and escape in the event of a fire, regardless of its size. It goes without saying that the best scenario is for your employees to never experience a fire, and this starts with being aware of fire prevention. Fire safety training protects your staff, protects your business and protects your reputation.
3. Do I have to carry out fire drills?
The short answer to this is yes. Following creation of your emergency plan and procedures the employer should test its effectiveness by way of a fire drill. This will ensure that staff are fully aware of what actions to take in the event of fire and where to safely assemble.
4. Why use Smart Health and Safety?
Smart Health and Safety have been providing high quality fire and safety services to businesses nationally for the past 20 years. We deliver our services in an effective, efficient and economic way. We are not a consultancy that bases itself on tick box compliance or constant client billing but one that prides itself on developing a partnership through collaboration.
